both to president obama and mitt romney campaigning there this afternoon. and there's more of a backdrop than just the early autumn trees. a brand new quinnipiac/cbs "new york times" poll has the president a full ten points ahead of romney in ohio. 53% to 43%. let's begin with cnn white house correspondent dan lothian. >> reporter: joe, even though a new poll shows the president with a double digit lead in ohio, mr. obama continues to push hard in the state. it's a huge priority for the campaign according to a top aide. by our count the president has visited ohio at least 13 times so far this year. this time ahead of early voting, which by the way begins next tuesday. now, today the president was again selling his policies and his record in a state he says has benefitted from the auto bailout. he talked about the thousands of jobs created but also hit china and went after his gop opponent. >> he's been talking tough on china. he says he's going to take the fight to them. he's going to go after these cheaters. and i've got to admit, that message is better than what he's actu
're awaiting dueling speeches today from republican presidential nominee mitt romney and president obama. both candidates campaigning across the battleground state of virginia. governor romney in springfield, mr. obama in virginia beach. it is the third time in a week they are both hitting the same stage. shane deapril is the editor of campaigns and elections magazine. democrats are pretty confident about virginia this time. should they be, shane? >> we've seen some dueling polls out of virginia. there are some that show the president with a clear lead. some show the contest quite a bit tighter. but i think what you're seeing with amount of time both campaigns are spending in virginia it is such a key state when it comes to the electoral college calculation for both campaigns. essentially in my sort of electoral college predictor i have president obama at 237 electoral votes right now. so that means the three really big swing states, ohio, virginia, and florida, they could be really killers for mitt romney if he can't find a way to wrestle two of those away from president obama. if the preside

. out on the campaign trail, both candidates are hitting the key battleground state of ohio today. they're hitting it hard. mitt romney's bus tour makes three stops while president obama makes two. after a new quinnipi ni peipiac shows president obama leading by 10 points. ohio is a must win for the romney campaign. no republican presidential candidate has ever won the white house without winning the state of ohio. cnn political director mark preston is in washington. so that's a pretty stunning poll, don't you think? >> it is, carol. it's got to be disturbing for the romney campaign. when you dig into the numbers a little bit deeper, you see that president obama has a 15 point advantage over mitt romney when it comes to women and mitt romney only has an 8 point advantage over barack obama when it comes to men. even more startling, for somebody who is trying to make this campaign all about the economy, when the question was asked who would do a better job handling the economy, barack obama comes in at 51%. mitt romney 45%. you know what, carol, he did try to make that case today. just a
